Trendy district

Ibiza's queer life takes place mainly in the old town of Ibiza Town. Specifically, in the port district of Sa Penya, the gay bars are lined up close together through the narrow, ascending alleys. Above it sits the historic fortified town of Dalt Vila. It is worth a stroll during the day and, with its walls, viewpoints and cafés, forms a quieter contrast to the hustle and bustle of the night. If you want to visit bars and restaurants on foot, a quarter around the harbour is the most convenient choice.

Nightlife

Ibiza is known worldwide for its nightlife, and that's exactly what characterizes the queer nightlife culture. In Sa Penya, it starts relaxed in the bars before the action later shifts to the big clubs. International DJs will play there. There are regular queer party series and nights. The season runs from May to October, and the evening is busiest in midsummer. None of this is cheap, but you get a nightlife that only a few destinations offer in this density.

Beaches

The most famous gay beach on the island is Es Cavallet in the south, a long sandy beach with a nudist area and several relaxed beach bars. During the day, a mixed, predominantly queer audience meets here. The atmosphere is much more relaxed than in the clubs of the night. Es Cavallet can be reached from the nearby Salt Pans Natural Park, which connects some beautiful stretches of beach on foot. If you like it even quieter, you will find other bays along the south coast away from the biggest currents.

Best time to visit

For beach and nightlife, the period from May to October is best, because that's when the season runs and the clubs are open. In mid-June, the island celebrates Ibiza Pride with a parade and harbour party, making this date particularly attractive for a queer trip. July and August are hottest and busiest, but the program is at its peak. In early summer and September, things are a little quieter and often cheaper.

Arrival

The easiest way to reach Ibiza is via the island's airport, which is located southwest of Ibiza Town. During the season, there are numerous direct connections from German-speaking countries, so that the journey is usually uncomplicated. From the airport, buses and taxis will take you to the old town in around 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can get to the island by ferry from mainland Spain or from Mallorca via the port of Ibiza Town.

Safety & LGBT Rights

As far as LGBT rights are concerned, Spain is one of the most progressive countries in Europe. Marriage for all has been possible since 2005, and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited by law. Ibiza is considered a very open and tolerant travel destination, where queer guests have been a natural part of it for decades. As with any busy party venue, it's worth taking care of your valuables in the nightly hustle and bustle.
