Gran Canaria

The heart of the queer scene is the Yumbo Centrum, a multi-level shopping center in Playa del Inglés right on the border with Maspalomas. By day, with its shops and restaurants, the complex looks fairly ordinary. In the evening, though, almost all of the gay nightlife is concentrated here. Around the Yumbo and in neighboring Playa del Inglés there are also many hotels and bungalow complexes aimed specifically at queer guests. With accommodation, beach and nightlife so close together, distances are short.

Bars, cafés and clubs fill several floors of the Yumbo Centrum, so you'd struggle to get through them all in one evening. Drag shows are a fixture and considered the resort's trademark. Things get going late and carry on deep into the night, and the upper levels usually fill up only after midnight. From quiet bars to loud dance floors, there is something for almost every taste without leaving the area.

Maspalomas beach is known for its vast sand dunes, which are a protected nature reserve. Behind the dunes is the traditionally queer section of the beach, a long-standing community meeting point that also includes a nude area. The numbered beach access points help with orientation, and the relevant areas are reached by a fairly long walk through the dunes. If you prefer something less secluded, Playa del Inglés has wide, well-equipped stretches of beach.

Temperatures rarely vary much, so you can visit Gran Canaria practically all year. The winter months are especially popular, when much of Europe is cold and the island offers mild beach weather. Two events stand out: Pride in Maspalomas in spring and Carnival, which takes over the island in February. These weeks are busier, prices rise and accommodation books up early.

The island's international gateway is Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), near Las Palmas in the northeast. Flights from London take about four and a half hours; there are no nonstop flights from New York, so you'll usually connect in Madrid. From the airport it's about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south to Maspalomas, around half an hour on the GC-1 highway by rental car, bus or taxi. Within the resort area, walking and short taxi rides get you around easily. US and UK citizens can visit Spain, including the Canary Islands, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under the Schengen rules; check the current entry requirements before you travel.

Gran Canaria is part of Spain, and Spanish law is among the most progressive in the world when it comes to protecting LGBTQ+ people. Same-sex marriage and adoption have been possible for years, and discrimination is prohibited by law. Maspalomas is open and relaxed, and couples holding hands are a familiar sight in the resort area. Away from the familiar areas, a normal degree of caution makes sense, as anywhere, for example on your way home at night.
