Trendy district

San Diego's queer life is concentrated in Hillcrest, the neighborhood around University Avenue. Since the 1970s, the area has become the city's LGBTQ hub and is now considered an officially recognized queer cultural district. Bars, cafés, boutiques and restaurants are close together, rainbow flags hang above the streets. All of this can be explored on foot, because the district is compact and much takes place along a few blocks. If you like it quieter and a little less touristy, the adjacent North Park is a relaxed mix of cafés, small shops and craft beer joints.

Nightlife

The dance club Rich's, known for its go-go dancers and changing party series, ensures long nights. The restaurant, bar and stage are connected by Urban Mo's, which is best known for its drag brunches. With the Gossip Grill , Hillcrest is also one of the few remaining lesbian bars in the USA. Because most of the addresses are within walking distance of the same district, the evening can be spent without a taxi. Compared to Los Angeles or San Francisco, it is a bit more relaxed and small-town.

Beaches

San Diego is a classic coastal destination with miles of beaches. Mission Beach offers a lively promenade and amusement park, while elegant La Jolla is a little more distinguished with sheltered bays and a striking rocky coastline. Below the cliffs, Black's Beach has long been considered a popular nudist beach and is also known as a cruising hangout. Thanks to the mild, consistent climate, beach days are possible almost all year round, although the waters of the Pacific Ocean tend to remain cool even in summer.

Best time to visit

The months of May to September are recommended, when the coastal fog season, known in the region as "June Gloom", subsides. Then the sun shines reliably, and the temperatures remain pleasant for long stretches. If you want to experience Pride, plan for July: San Diego Pride is one of the largest festivals in the USA with over 250,000 visitors and fills parade and stages in and around Balboa Park. Outside the height of summer, accommodation is usually cheaper and the beaches are much emptier.

Arrival

San Diego International Airport is located just minutes from the city center and is easily accessible via U.S. hubs; from Europe, the journey usually leads via a stopover. In the city itself, the tram (trolley) and buses connect the main districts, but a rental car is worthwhile for excursions along the coast and in the surrounding area. Hillcrest, the beaches and Balboa Park are all short drives apart. A day trip across the border to Tijuana, Mexico, is also uncomplicated from here.

Safety & LGBT Rights

California is one of the most queer-friendly states in the USA, same-sex marriages are recognized nationwide and discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibited by law. In San Diego and especially in Hillcrest, openly lived visibility is everyday life, holding hands is hardly noticeable. As everywhere in larger cities, the usual attention is recommended at night in some areas. Serious problems are rare for queer travelers here, though, and the city is considered one of the most laid-back destinations on the West Coast.
