Atlanta is the metropolis of the US state of Georgia and is considered by many to be the queer capital of the southern states. The city is cosmopolitan, ethnically diverse and surprisingly green for a major US city. If you want to combine queer life with a southern atmosphere, civil rights history and a great festival culture, you will find an amazingly relaxed destination here.

Trendy district

Midtown is where the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene beats, around 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue. Directly adjacent is Ansley Square, a small shopping centre that has been a meeting point for the community for decades. Here, bars, cafés and clubs are within walking distance, in the middle of high-rise buildings and the extensive Piedmont Park. With one of the largest Black Pride scenes in the country, the queer life of the city also takes on a special character. Beyond Midtown, neighborhoods such as neighboring Virginia-Highland and parts of East Atlanta have also earned a reputation as open, mixed-use neighborhoods.

Nightlife

A permanent fixture is Blake's on the Park, which has been a meeting place with well-known drag shows for decades. If you like it rougher, go to the leather and Levi bar Atlanta Eagle with its large outdoor terrace. For long club nights with DJs and performances, X Midtown is the place to be, while Friends on Ponce caters to the no-fuss neighborhood pub with pool tables. With short distances, it is easy to combine more than one location in one evening. On weekends, the bars usually fill up late, but it often continues until the early hours of the morning.

Best time to visit

The most pleasant time to travel is in spring and autumn, because the summers in Georgia get hot and humid. In October, Atlanta Pride will also take place in Piedmont Park (2026: October 10–11) with a parade and two-day park festival, which regularly attracts over 300,000 people and is one of the largest Prides in the Southeast. If you want to experience the festival, you should book accommodation early, as prices rise significantly around the weekend.

Arrival

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and can be reached from Germany with direct flights and numerous connecting flights. From the terminal, the MARTA train takes you directly to downtown and Midtown in just over twenty minutes. Within the trendy districts you can often get further on foot, for longer distances MARTA, driving services or a rental car are practical. During the day, stops such as the World of Coca-Cola, the huge Georgia Aquarium, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and the green BeltLine Trail are worthwhile.

Safety & LGBT Rights

Within the more conservative region, Atlanta is considered a liberal retreat, and in Midtown you usually move around relaxed as a queer person. At the federal level, same-sex marriages are recognized, but Georgia lacks statewide discrimination protection that explicitly covers sexual orientation and gender identity. Outside the trendy neighborhoods and in more rural parts of the state, the climate is noticeably more restrained, which is why open affection is not a matter of course everywhere. At night, as in any big city, healthy caution applies in individual neighborhoods, but in the core of the queer area, the situation is uncomplicated.
