Washington, D.C.
As the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C. is best known for politics, marble monuments and the free Smithsonian museums. In addition, it has one of the most visible and politically engaged queer communities in the country. If you are looking for more than the National Mall, the White House and the Capitol, you will find a city with a grown scene, good local transport and short distances between sightseeing and nightlife.
Trendy district
The historic heart is Dupont Circle, the area around Connecticut Avenue and P Street NW. Since the 1970s, it has been the center of gay and lesbian life, initially mainly because of the affordable brownstone houses and the central location. In recent years, much has shifted to neighboring Logan Circle and U Street. Also worth seeing is the up-and-coming Shaw neighborhood with its African-American history and the gastronomy around 14th Street.
Nightlife
A classic hangout is JR's Bar on 17th Street, whose outdoor terrace is still busy today. Logan Circle and U Street are younger and a little louder, such as Trade and Uproar. The highlight of the year is Capital Pride in June, one of the most politically charged Pride events in the USA. In the shadow of the Capitol and the Supreme Court, the procession moves through the streets, often with federal employees, lawmakers and diplomats from queer-friendly nations also taking part.
Best time to visit
The most pleasant time to travel is in the mild spring from April to June or in the golden autumn between September and October. In spring, the famous cherry blossom transforms the Tidal Basin into a sea of pink blossoms, attracting visitors from all over the world. Midsummer is often humid and hot, winter remains rather cool. If you want to experience Capital Pride, plan to visit in June.
Arrival
From German-speaking countries, direct and connecting flights land at Washington Dulles Airport or Reagan National Airport, which is close to the city. From Reagan National, the metro leads directly to the center, from Dulles you can continue by the Silver Line of the metro or by shuttle bus. With the metro and bus you can get around the city itself, many sights and trendy districts are within walking distance anyway. A rental car is rarely necessary for a pure city stay.
Safety & LGBT Rights
In the District of Columbia, same-sex marriage and comprehensive protection against discrimination are legally anchored. Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and U Street are considered open and queer-friendly. As in any big city, it is advisable to pay attention to your surroundings at night and not to carry valuables openly. To enter the USA, German citizens usually need a valid ESTA permit, which is applied for online before travelling.
