Dupont Circle & Frank Kameny Way
Dupont Circle is the historic center of queer Washington. Along 17th Street – officially renamed Frank Kameny Way in honor of activist Frank Kameny – there are rows of gay bars, cafes and rainbow crosswalks. This has been the heart of the capital's LGBTQ community for decades.
Lincoln Memorial
At the western end of the National Mall sits the Lincoln Memorial with the monumental statue of Abraham Lincoln. From the steps you can look out over the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument – one of the most iconic views in the USA. The place is open around the clock and is particularly atmospheric in the evening.
United States Capitol
The Capitol, with its white dome visible from afar, forms the eastern end of the National Mall and is the seat of the U.S. Congress. Free guided tours of the magnificent rotunda are available by appointment. From here, the view extends over the entire mall to the Lincoln Memorial.
White House
The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is the official residence of the U.S. president and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. From Lafayette Square to the north or Ellipse Park to the south, you'll get the best views of the famous façade. A must-see on any walk through the political center of the city.
