San Francisco
San Francisco is queer history at your fingertips. In the Castro, the world's most famous gayborhood, rainbow flags fly on every corner, and Harvey Milk's legacy is palpable everywhere – his old camera workshop on Castro Street is a reminder of this. Stroll past the Castro Theatre, bars like the Twin Peaks Tavern, and small cafes that call the community home. A few steps away is the GLBT Historical Society Museum, ideal for immersing yourself in movement. It also comes alive in the SoMa district, home to the leather and fetish scene around the legendary Folsom Street Fair in the fall. Don't forget: The weather is idiosyncratic, the summer often foggy and cool. September and October bring the warmest, clearest days. Bring a jacket anyway – the famous breeze almost always blows through the hilly streets.
