Most of the shops are lined up along University Avenue and the adjacent streets, so you can easily walk from door to door in one evening. Above the central intersection is the old neon sign with the lettering Hillcrest, which has become the landmark of the district. Rich's is considered the largest and one of the oldest clubs in the city, with two dance floors and a DJ program on weekends. For over three decades, Urban MO's has combined bar, grill and show stage and is a fixed meeting place. Flicks has been focusing on music videos and dance for decades. With the Brass Rail, the city operates one of its most traditional addresses, known for Latin nights and drag shows.

In addition to the classic men's bars, Hillcrest also has a lesbian scene. Gossip Grill is one of the few remaining all-female bars in the USA and is an important meeting point for queer women. If you like it rougher and cruisier, head a little further to North Park, where the Eagle serves the leather and fetish scene. So the nightlife is spread over two neighborhoods close to each other, with Hillcrest as the clear center.
