Trendy district

Over the years, Pattaya's queer scene has been spread over several neighborhoods, whose focus has shifted again and again. Boyztown in the city center was the first address for a long time and stood above all for elaborate go-go-boy shows. Other bars and cabarets settled around Sunee Plaza. Today, however, the real center is further south in Jomtien, around the Jomtien Complex. For queer guests, the city around these neighborhoods feels very open and uncomplicated, and the individual areas are close enough to each other to easily combine them in one evening.

Nightlife

The Jomtien Complex, also known as Supertown Walking Street, has become the city's most popular gay nightlife area after the pandemic. Over thirty bars, nightly cabaret shows, restaurants, hotels and massage studios are lined up close together, so that the distances remain short. The regular program also includes the big travesty shows by Tiffany's and Alcazar, which have been among the most famous stages in Thailand for decades. Things are a little quieter away from the main mile, where there are smaller bars with less hustle and bustle.

Beaches

During the day, the scene is drawn to Dongtan Beach, the gay section of Jomtien Beach south of the city center. The beach is easily accessible via the promenade, and the Jomtien Complex is within walking distance, practically connecting day and night. For clearer water and quieter bays, a boat trip to the offshore island of Koh Larn with its turquoise beaches is worthwhile. The crossing from Bali Hai Pier takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the boat. If you stay longer, you can also spend the night on Koh Larn and experience the island much more quietly after the departure of the day trippers.

Best time to visit

It is most pleasant to travel in the dry and somewhat cooler season from November to February. During these months, the evenings remain mild, which makes beach days and bar hopping equally easier. From March to May it gets noticeably hot, the rainy season between June and October brings shorter, mostly evening showers. If you don't like heat and humidity as much, it's better to stick to the winter months.

Arrival

Most guests fly to Bangkok and continue from there, as Pattaya is a good two-hour drive southeast of the capital on the Gulf of Thailand. There are bus connections from Suvarnabhumi Airport, as well as taxis and pre-bookable transfers directly to Pattaya. Closer is U-Tapao Airport, which mainly serves regional and individual international routes. Within the city, you can get around cheaply with the shared taxis known as Songthaews, which run on fixed routes and can be stopped by ringing the bell. The easiest and cheapest option is for the route between the city centre and Jomtien.

Safety & LGBT Rights

Thailand has long been one of the most laid-back destinations for LGBTQ guests, and the same goes for Pattaya. Since 2025, marriage has been possible for all in the country, so same-sex couples can marry. Around the trendy districts you move openly and easily; the usual precautions against pickpocketing and overpriced nightlife offers apply as everywhere. As a German tourist, you enter the country without a visa for tourist stays.
