Gay attractions in New York City almost inevitably lead to the West Village, where the history of the modern LGBTQ movement began. On Christopher Street stands the Stonewall Inn, in front of which guests resisted a police raid on the night of June 28, 1969. This resistance gave rise to the tradition of Pride marches. Diagonally opposite is the small Christopher Park, which is part of the Stonewall National Monument, the first national monument in the USA dedicated to queer heritage. Since June 2024, a dedicated visitor center at 51 Christopher Street has complemented the monument and showcases LGBTQ history and culture; admission is free.

Around Christopher Street and Sheridan Square, the historic heart of the scene can be easily explored on foot, past bars and cafés, some of which have been around for decades. The highlight of the year is NYC Pride. The march will take place on Sunday, June 28 in 2026, starting at 26th Street and 5th Avenue, passing by the Stonewall Inn and ending in the West Village. On the same day, PrideFest, one of the largest queer street fairs in the country, will take place.
