Gay attractions in Amsterdam tell a lot about the city's role in the queer movement. The most important place is the Homomonument at Westermarkt, which was inaugurated in 1987 and is the first memorial in the world to commemorate the persecution of homosexuals. It consists of three pink granite triangles that together form a larger triangle and is located right next to the Westerkerk and close to the Anne Frank House. Right next to it is the Pink Point, an information kiosk where volunteers provide information about the city's queer history and provide material.
If you want to go deeper, you will find one of the largest queer archives in the world at IHLIA LGBTI Heritage with documents, images and objects from over a hundred years. Around the Westermarkt and the central canals, queer history can be easily explored on foot, past the historic trendy district of the Reguliersdwarsstraat. The highlight of 2026 is WorldPride: From July 25 to August 8, the city celebrates, the absolute highlight is the Canal Parade on the water on August 1, when decorated boats parade through the historic canals.
