Located at around 1,500 meters in a valley basin of the Colombian Andes, Medellín rightly bears the nickname "City of Eternal Spring". Throughout the year, the mild climate remains surprisingly consistent, making the city a convenient destination without heat spikes or frost. After decades of being considered a symbol of violence, Medellín has reinvented itself and is now one of the most innovative and liveable cities in Latin America. The locals call themselves paisas. They are known for a warmth and openness that queer travelers quickly notice.

Trendy district

Medellín does not have an officially designated gay district. Instead, queer life is concentrated in the touristy heart of El Poblado, where most of the bars, clubs and restaurants are located between hills and green spaces. If you like it quieter and less touristy, the residential district of Laureles is a relaxed, queer-friendly alternative with many cafés. Both areas are well suited as a location because the accommodation offer is also concentrated here. During the day, you can easily explore the city from there, such as the brightly painted Comuna 13 as a symbol of change or the extensive botanical garden.

Nightlife

In and around El Poblado, going out takes place predominantly. A classic of the community is the Bar Donde Aquellos, which has served as a meeting place since 2000. Clubs like Industry and Chiquita attract the party crowd to dance, who often don't really get going until late at night. Classic scene addresses and general party locations merge smoothly. Overall, the nightlife here is open and mixed.

Best time to visit

Due to the altitude, it remains spring-like all year round, so temperature fluctuations are not a big issue. The rainfall is more decisive: the drier phases are usually between December and March and between June and August. If you want to experience the queer community, it's best to plan around Pride, which usually takes place in June or July with parades, parties and community events. In the rainy months, short, heavy showers in the afternoon are normal. However, they rarely seriously hinder a journey.

Arrival

International flights land at José María Córdova Airport near Rionegro, about an hour outside the city. Those who arrive take a taxi or shared taxi (colectivo) from the terminal down into the valley to Medellín. In the inner city, the metro forms the backbone of local transport, supplemented by the striking cable cars (Metrocable) that lead up to the slopes. For excursions to the flower village of Guatapé with the rock El Peñón, for example, buses leave from the northern terminal.

Safety & LGBT Rights

Colombia is one of the more progressive countries in the region: same-sex marriage has been possible since 2016, and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited by law. Medellín itself is considered gay-friendly, in the tourist districts you can move around in a relaxed way. Nevertheless, common sense is worthwhile: stay in busy areas such as El Poblado or Laureles at night if possible, use taxis or apps instead of long walks, and leave expensive jewelry in the hotel. Outside the well-known neighborhoods and in lonely corners, more attention is appropriate.
