Cherry Grove
The island's historic LGBT stronghold, a haven for the queer community since the 1930s. Known for murals, mosaics and art by locals, as well as beaches, restaurants and clubs - wonderfully relaxed and colourful.
Fire Island Pines
The chic neighboring village, named after the wind-sculpted pines along the zigzag boardwalks. Architectural paradise with modern beach house architecture, gay parties and the infamous tea dance spectacle on the harbour.
Sunken Forest (Sailors Haven)
An enchanted, around 300-year-old holly forest – the only one of its kind on the east coast. On a 2.4 km long boardwalk you hike through the unique ecosystem, which is protected behind the dunes below sea level.
The Meat Rack
The forested strip of dunes between Cherry Grove and The Pines is a legend of gay history – a nature reserve that becomes the island's most famous cruising spot after dark.
Schwule Sehenswürdigkeiten auf Fire Island sind weniger einzelne Bauwerke als vielmehr Orte mit langer queerer Geschichte. Seit den 1940er Jahren gilt die Insel als Zufluchtsort der LGBTQ-Community, und Cherry Grove war eine der ersten Gegenden in den USA, in der schwules und lesbisches Leben offen stattfinden konnte. Das bekannteste Ereignis ist die Invasion of the Pines am 4. Juli: 1976 fuhr eine Gruppe Drag-Performer aus Cherry Grove zur Antwort auf eine Diskriminierung im Blue Whale per Boot in die Pines hinüber, seither wiederholt sich das jedes Jahr als ausgelassene Drag-Parade am Hafen.
Wer die Insel zu Fuß erkundet, läuft über die typischen Holzstege ohne Autos und durchquert auf dem Weg zwischen den Orten den Meat Rack mit dem historischen Carrington House von 1912. Etwas weiter westlich bei Sailors Haven liegt der Sunken Forest, ein alter Stechpalmenwald im Fire Island National Seashore, dessen Bewuchs teils mehrere Hundert Jahre alt ist und der über Bohlenwege zugänglich ist. Dazu kommen die langen, oft am Strand auch textilfreien Abschnitte, die das Inselleben prägen.
