Trendy district

The Zona Rosa, a centrally located district in the Cuauhtémoc district, is the queer heart of the city. Around Calle Amberes and along Avenida Insurgentes, there is one place after another, from small cafés to bars with rainbow flags on the door. The Zona Rosa is considered one of the most established gay neighborhoods in Latin America. It is easily accessible via the Insurgentes metro station. If you like it more relaxed, you will also find an open, queer-friendly atmosphere with galleries, boutiques and cozy cafés in the neighboring districts of Roma and Condesa.

Nightlife

The central nightlife mile is Calle Amberes in the Zona Rosa, where bars, clubs and cabaret stages are concentrated in a small space. The offer ranges from a quiet meeting place for an after-work beer to drag and cabaret shows to large dance floors that are filled until the early hours of the morning. Unlike in many cities, the nightlife is not spread over remote addresses, but takes place mostly within walking distance of the same district. The scene is active all year round. It gets correspondingly crowded on weekends.

Best time to visit

Mexico City is located at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, which is why it remains mild all year round despite its location in the tropics. The most pleasant time to travel is between March and May, when the dry season makes for stable, sunny weather. From June to October, rain falls more frequently, usually in the form of short afternoon showers. A highlight on the calendar is the Pride parade in June, which draws hundreds of thousands to the streets around Paseo de la Reforma every year.

Arrival

The international airport is the Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez (MEX) in the east of the city. There are direct flights from Frankfurt from German-speaking countries, otherwise you can travel via Madrid, Amsterdam or a US hub, for example. From the airport to the city center, you can take a taxi, a ride-hailing app or the metro. Depending on traffic, the journey to the Zona Rosa takes 30 to 60 minutes. Within the city, the metro is cheap and close-meshed, and app-based transport services are a convenient alternative for shorter distances.

Safety & LGBT Rights

Same-sex marriage has been possible in Mexico City since 2010 and is now valid nationwide; the capital is one of the most progressive regions in the country in terms of LGBT rights. In the Zona Rosa and the surrounding neighborhoods, open queer life is visible and accepted. As in any metropolis of millions, you should watch out for pickpocketing, carry valuables inconspicuously and rely on driving service apps rather than street taxis at night. Outside the central, well-frequented districts, a little more restraint is advisable. In the queer core of the city, however, you move around in a relaxed way.
