Antwerp is Belgium's fashion and diamond capital and packs an amazingly vibrant queer scene into a small space. Between baroque gables, the mighty Cathedral of Our Lady and the magnificent train station, you can feel how design and history are effortlessly combined here. Those who like to travel on foot have quickly opened up the city for themselves.

Trendy district

The scene is concentrated in the historic centre and in neighbouring Schipperskwartier. Around Oudaan, Melkmarkt and the Van Schoonhovenstraat lies the area known as the "Pink Triangle", which is considered an unofficial gay village. Because the distances remain short, bars, community meeting places and the rest of the nightlife can be easily connected on foot. In the middle of it all is Het Roze Huis, the queer community house that serves as a contact point and social center. During the day, it's worth taking a detour to the trendy Het Zuid district with its galleries and cafés or to the MAS Museum at the harbour.

Nightlife

In the evening, people meet in Café DeLux with its two terraces or in the cozy Café den Draak, which is housed in the queer community house Het Roze Huis. A classic is the Hessenhuis, which becomes a DJ party after midnight. Red & Blue is considered the hottest club, which offers big parties, drag shows and international DJs. The audience mixes loosely, and much takes place around the weekend. Because the venues are close to each other, an evening can be planned well without long distances, and spontaneous changes from café to club also work without any problems.

Best time to visit

From May to September, Antwerp shows its friendliest side, with mild temperatures and long evenings on the Scheldt. The absolute highlight is Antwerp Pride at the beginning of August: in 2026, it will run from 5 to 9 August, with the parade moving through the city centre on 8 August. In addition, there is the Love United Festival on the water and the Pink Village as a festival zone. If you like it quieter, travel in spring or early autumn, when the city is less crowded.

Arrival

From Germany you can easily get there by train: high-speed connections via Brussels or Cologne stop at the central station Antwerpen-Centraal, which is itself a sight. By car, the city can be reached via the A1 and the Belgian motorway network, but there is an environmental zone in the city centre and parking space is scarce. Air travelers usually land in Brussels and continue from there by train in about 40 minutes. On site, trams and Premetro take you everywhere, and much can be accessed on foot anyway.

Safety & LGBT Rights

Belgium is one of the most progressive countries in Europe when it comes to LGBT rights: marriage for all has been in force since 2003, adoption and protection against discrimination are enshrined in law. In the central districts and in the scene area, holding hands is hardly noticeable, because Antwerp is cosmopolitan. As in any big city, the usual attention is recommended in individual corners at night, for example around the train station or in less busy alleys. Antwerp Pride and the year-round offer of the community house show how naturally the city deals with queer life. Overall, you travel relaxed and safe here.
