As one of four ships of the Azamara shipping company, the Azamara Onward offers a comparatively small, but personal cruise experience with space for around 700 guests. Longer layovers in the ports, often until late in the evening, are part of the core of the shipping company's brand and allow destinations to be explored away from the usual daily tourist flows.

Among the queer community, the Azamara Onward is best known for its role as a charter ship for Olivia, the operator specializing in lesbian travelers. For multi-day cruises through the Greek islands, which often start in Athens and come up with a first stop on Lesbos, the entire ship is booked exclusively.
