Itinerary

8 stops · 9 nights

  1. 1
    Lisbon (Portugal) Start
    Embarkation

Lisbon stretches over hills on the banks of the Tagus River. Take tram 28 through Alfama, visit the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém, and look out over red rooftops from the viewpoints. Príncipe Real and Bairro Alto are where most of the queer bars are located.

  2. 2
Porto / Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal)

Porto stretches in terraces up the hillside above the Douro. You walk through the Ribeira district, over the double-decker Dom Luís I bridge and visit the port wine cellars opposite in Vila Nova de Gaia. At the São Bento train station, azulejos tell the story of the country.

  3. 3
    Peso da Régua (Portugal)

Peso da Régua is the center of the Alto Douro wine region, whose terraced vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn how port wine is made at the Douro Museum, and taste it where the grapes grow at the quintas around the town.

  4. 4
    Vega de Terrón (Spain)

Vega de Terrón is a small pier on the Douro, right on the border between Spain and Portugal. From here you will drive to Salamanca, whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Plaza Mayor, the old university and the two cathedrals.

  5. 5
    Barca d'Alva (Portugal)

Barca d'Alva is located on the upper Douro River, right on the Spanish border. From here, you'll head up to Castelo Rodrigo, a walled village high above the plain, and through a landscape of olive groves and almond trees that bloom white and pink in late winter.

  6. 6
    Pocinho (Portugal)

Pocinho is located on the upper Douro near Vila Nova de Foz Côa. From here you can reach the Côa Valley with its Stone Age rock engravings in the open air, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the museum that explains the images of horses, cattle and ibex.

  7. 7
    Pinhão (Portugal)

Pinhão is located in the middle of the Douro vineyards, where the Rio Pinhão flows into the Douro. In the small train station, azulejos show scenes of the grape harvest, and all around, the grapes for the port wine grow on steep terraces, which you can taste at the quintas in the area.

  8. 8
    Afurada (Portugal) Finish
    Disembarkation

Afurada is a fishing village on the Douro estuary on the Vila Nova de Gaia side. In the alleys, the laundry hangs to dry, in the public washhouse you still wash by hand, and in the restaurants at the harbor you eat freshly grilled sardines.

The ship · AmaSintra

The AmaSintra is the youngest ship of AmaWaterways. It operates on the Douro between Porto and the Spanish border area near Salamanca. With around a hundred cabins, it looks more compact and personal than many riverboats on the Rhine or Danube, and the equipment is considered upscale, including on board and on most shore excursions. The operator Brand g Vacations, which specializes in LGBT+ travel, charters the ship completely for a trip that starts in Lisbon and goes via Porto to the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, with a stop in historic villages on the river. Because the entire ship is rented out to queer guests for this trip, the program from excursions to evening entertainment is consistently tailored to this target group - a Douro cruise where no one on board has to explain their identity.

Frequently asked questions

How does an LGBT cruise differ from a regular one?

As a rule the entire ship is chartered — a 100% queer crowd with its own programme of DJs, drag shows and themed parties.

What is usually included?

Cabin, full board, entertainment and pool are mostly included. Premium drinks, spa and shore excursions are usually charged separately.

Is the trip suitable for solo travellers?

Yes — the solo share is high on many trips, and there are often dedicated solo meet-ups on board.

What are the cancellation terms?

That depends on the operator. You will find the exact deadlines and conditions directly with the provider.

What about safety when docking in restrictive countries?

The operators are careful about route choices. At controversial ports, shore excursions are curated thoughtfully.
