Itinerary

8 stops · 11 nights

  1. 1
    Cairo (Egypt) Start
    Embarkation

Cairo welcomes you with the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and the mosques of the Islamic Old City. From the citadel with the alabaster mosque of Muhammad Ali you look over the city of millions on the Nile, whose alleys are lively until late at night.

  2. 2
Giza / Saqqara / Memphis (Egypt)

On the Giza plateau, stand in front of the pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos and the Great Sphinx. In Saqqara, you will see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest pyramid in Egypt, and in the open-air museum of Memphis, you will see the reclining colossal statue of Ramses II.

  3. 3
    Luxor (Egypt)

On the east bank of Luxor, you will walk through the Hall of Columns of Karnak and the Luxor Temple. On the west bank are the Valley of the Kings with the tomb of Tutankhamun and the terraced temple of Hatshepsut, and on the way there you will pass the Colossi of Memnon.

  4. 4
    Edfu (Egypt)

In Edfu, visit the Temple of Horus, one of Egypt's best-preserved temples from Ptolemaic times. The tall pylon, granite falcons at the entrance, preserved roof, and relief-covered walls will show you what an ancient sanctuary looked like.

  5. 5
    Aswan (Egypt)

Aswan is located on the first Nile cataract, where granite rocks and islands divide the river. Sail by felucca to the island of Elephantine, visit the Temple of Isis of Philae and the unfinished obelisk in the old quarry. South of the city, the high dam dams Lake Nasser.

  6. 6
    Abu Simbel (Egypt)

Ramses II had the two rock temples of Abu Simbel carved into the sandstone on the Nile, and four seated figures over 20 meters high guard the large temple. When Lake Nasser was dammed, both temples were sawn into blocks and rebuilt further up.

  7. 7
    Kom Ombo (Egypt)

The temple of Kom Ombo stands directly on the banks of the Nile and is dedicated to two gods at the same time: the crocodile-headed Sobek and the hawk-headed Haroeris. Therefore, it has two entrances and two sanctuaries. In the crocodile museum next door, you can see mummified crocodiles from the surrounding area.

  8. 8
    Dendera / Qena (Egypt) Finish
    Disembarkation

Near Qena is the Temple of Hathor of Dendera with its columns, whose capitals bear the face of the goddess, and colored ceiling paintings. On the roof you will find the chapels with a copy of the famous zodiac, the original hangs in the Louvre today.

The ship · AmaLilia

The AmaLilia is a modern river cruise ship operated by AmaWaterways that operates exclusively on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. With only 41 cabins and room for 82 guests, she offers a comparatively intimate experience among Nile cruisers. An Egyptologist traveling on board classifies the temples and excavation sites on the shore before small excursion groups disembark.

For queer travelers, the ship is best known for Brand g Vacations: The tour operator, which specializes in LGBTQ+ round trips, regularly rents the AmaLilia in its entirety. The charter trips combine a stay in Cairo with a multi-day trip on the Nile and are aimed at a predominantly gay group of guests who want to combine culture and history with a relaxed on-board atmosphere. Instead of loud parties, the focus is on smaller, personal formats, from cabaret evenings to discussion rounds with the tour guides.

Those who book the AmaLilia outside of such charters travel in the regular AmaWaterways program and benefit from the same facilities: suites with a French balcony, pool deck and a range of dishes between Egyptian and international cuisine.

Frequently asked questions

How does an LGBT cruise differ from a regular one?

As a rule the entire ship is chartered — a 100% queer crowd with its own programme of DJs, drag shows and themed parties.

What is usually included?

Cabin, full board, entertainment and pool are mostly included. Premium drinks, spa and shore excursions are usually charged separately.

Is the trip suitable for solo travellers?

Yes — the solo share is high on many trips, and there are often dedicated solo meet-ups on board.

What are the cancellation terms?

That depends on the operator. You will find the exact deadlines and conditions directly with the provider.

What about safety when docking in restrictive countries?

The operators are careful about route choices. At controversial ports, shore excursions are curated thoughtfully.
