Itinerary

9 stops · 7 nights

  1. 1
    Basel (Switzerland) Start
    Embarkation

Basel is located at the bend of the Rhine, where Switzerland borders Germany and France. You walk from the red town hall on the market square up to the cathedral with a view over the Rhine, visit the art museum or the Fondation Beyeler and cross over with a ferry that drives the current alone.

  2. 2
    Strasbourg (France)

Strasbourg welcomes you with the Gothic red sandstone cathedral and its astronomical clock. In the Petite France district, half-timbered houses are reflected in the canals of the Ill, and a little outside the old town, the European Parliament meets in the European Quarter.

  3. 3
    Speyer (Germany)

In Speyer stands the Imperial and St. Mary's Cathedral, the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the burial place of Salian emperors. Maximilianstraße leads from the cathedral to the Old Gate, and the Soviet space shuttle Buran is located in the Technology Museum.

  4. 4
    Heidelberg (Germany)

Above the old town of Heidelberg towers the red castle ruins with the Great Barrel in the basement. Below, the Old Bridge connects the city with the other bank of the Neckar, and from the Philosopher's Path you can look over the rooftops of Germany's oldest university city.

  5. 5
    Rüdesheim (Germany)

Rüdesheim is located in the Rheingau at the foot of the vineyards and at the beginning of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site. Wine taverns are lined up in Drosselgasse, and the cable car takes you over the vines up to the Niederwald monument with a view of the Rhine.

  6. 6
    Koblenz (Germany)

At the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in Koblenz stands the Deutsches Eck with the equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Take the cable car across the Rhine up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and in the old town the Church of Our Lady and the Schängelbrunnen await you.

  7. 7
    Cochem (Germany)

Cochem is located in a Moselle loop, above which stands the Reichsburg with its towers. In the old town with half-timbered houses and market fountains, you can taste Moselle Riesling, and the chairlift takes you up to the Pinnerkreuz with a view over the valley.

  8. 8
    Cologne (Germany)

Cologne welcomes you with the cathedral on the banks of the Rhine, whose south tower you climb over 533 steps. Through the old town with its breweries you walk to the Chocolate Museum, and around Schaafenstraße is the city's most famous queer nightlife mile, which celebrates Cologne Pride in the summer.

  9. 9
    Amsterdam (Netherlands) Finish
    Disembarkation

The best way to explore the Dutch capital is along the canals with their narrow gabled houses. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are close to each other, and at Westermarkt the gay monument commemorates persecuted gays and lesbians.

The ship · Amadeus Aurea

While older Danube ships usually rely on classic diesel engines, the Amadeus Aurea is one of the newer ships in the Amadeus fleet and runs particularly quietly and environmentally friendly with hybrid propulsion. With around eighty cabins and generous panoramic windows, it is aimed at guests who want to enjoy the river landscape and riverside towns in peace and quiet instead of relying on animation and mass audiences.

Providers such as Brand g Vacations regularly charter ships of the Amadeus fleet for LGBTQ+ Danube cruises between Budapest, Vienna and Passau – so far, however, other ships of the shipping company that have been in use for some time, not explicitly the Aurea. If you are looking for a queer Danube trip in the future, you should therefore ask exactly which ship is being chartered when booking. In any case, the Aurea itself offers the technical and design basis that such charter partners already appreciate on other Amadeus ships.

Frequently asked questions

How does an LGBT cruise differ from a regular one?

As a rule the entire ship is chartered — a 100% queer crowd with its own programme of DJs, drag shows and themed parties.

What is usually included?

Cabin, full board, entertainment and pool are mostly included. Premium drinks, spa and shore excursions are usually charged separately.

Is the trip suitable for solo travellers?

Yes — the solo share is high on many trips, and there are often dedicated solo meet-ups on board.

What are the cancellation terms?

That depends on the operator. You will find the exact deadlines and conditions directly with the provider.

What about safety when docking in restrictive countries?

The operators are careful about route choices. At controversial ports, shore excursions are curated thoughtfully.
