Itinerary

11 stops · 12 nights

  1. 1
    Siem Reap (Cambodia) Start
    Embarkation

From Siem Reap you will visit the temples of Angkor. Angkor Wat is best experienced at sunrise, in the Bayon in Angkor Thom stone faces look at you, and in Ta Prohm tree roots wrap around the walls. In the evening, Pub Street beckons with food stalls and bars.

  2. 2
    Kampong Cham (Cambodia)

Kampong Cham is a provincial town on the Mekong River with French colonial buildings on the waterfront. Nearby are Wat Nokor, a temple ruin from the Angkor period with a modern pagoda in its center, and the two hills Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei with their pagodas.

  3. 3
    Wat Hanchey (Cambodia)

Wat Hanchey is located on a hill above the Mekong River north of Kampong Cham. Next to the current pagoda are brick temples from before Angkor, and from the top you have a wide view over the river, the islands and the rice fields.

  4. 4
    Angkor Ban (Cambodia)

Angkor Ban is a village on the Mekong River whose traditional wooden houses on stilts have survived the wars. As you walk through the town, you will see village life, the Buddhist pagoda, and gardens under the houses, and children will often greet you curiously along the way.

  5. 5
    Phnom Penh (Cambodia)

Phnom Penh is located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. Visit the Royal Palace with the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, and the Art Deco-style Central Market. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek commemorate the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.

  6. 6
    Long Khanh (Vietnam)

On the Mekong island of Long Khanh in the border area with Cambodia, you will ride a cycle rickshaw through villages with wooden houses, small pagodas and orchards. You will experience everyday life away from the cities, between fishing boats, small workshops and the market on the shore.

  7. 7
    Cù Lao Giêng (Vietnam)

Cù Lao Giêng is a river island in the Mekong River in An Giang Province. There is a Catholic church and a former monastery from the French colonial era here, and in the villages you can see rice, fruit and vegetables growing on the fertile alluvial soils.

  8. 8
    Sa Dec (Vietnam)

Sa Dec in the Mekong Delta is known for its flower villages, where nurseries create beds right up to the canals. In the city stands the house of Huỳnh Thủy Lê, whose love for Marguerite Duras the writer processed in the novel "The Lover".

  9. 9
    Vinh Long (Vietnam)

Vinh Long is located between two arms of the Mekong River in the delta. Small boats take you through narrow canals to orchards, brickworks, and workshops where rice paper and puffed rice are made, and on islands like An Bình, guests stay with families.

  10. 10
    My Tho (Vietnam)

My Tho is located only about seventy kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City on the Mekong River. You will visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda, sail through canals under water palms in a sampan and taste coconut candies, honey tea and tropical fruits on the islands in the river.

  11. 11
Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) Finish
    Disembarkation

Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, welcomes you with moped streams and food stalls. Around Notre-Dame Cathedral are the main post office and opera house from the colonial era, the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum tell of the war, and you can taste pho at the Ben Thanh Market.

The ship · Mekong Jewel

The Mekong Jewel is considered the most comfortable ship on the Mekong: 34 individually designed suites, four decks, pool, spa with sauna and steam bath, a separate nail salon and hairdressing area as well as two lounges are part of the equipment of the comparatively young river cruiser from Uniworld Boutique River Cruises.

Uniworld has been cooperating with R Family Vacations for some time and regularly offers fully chartered LGBTQ+ trips on the Mekong on this basis. The route leads from Siem Reap in Cambodia via Phnom Penh and several smaller stations to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. On board, R-Family founders Gregg Kaminsky and Kelli Carpenter will take over the tour guide, supplemented by their own entertainment program with queer artists and thematic evenings.

The Mekong Jewel is aimed at a mixed queer target group – from couples to rainbow families – but embeds the program in Uniworld's regular luxury amenities: small group size, excursions with local guides and a gastronomic concept that is oriented towards the respective region.

Frequently asked questions

How does an LGBT cruise differ from a regular one?

As a rule the entire ship is chartered — a 100% queer crowd with its own programme of DJs, drag shows and themed parties.

What is usually included?

Cabin, full board, entertainment and pool are mostly included. Premium drinks, spa and shore excursions are usually charged separately.

Is the trip suitable for solo travellers?

Yes — the solo share is high on many trips, and there are often dedicated solo meet-ups on board.

What are the cancellation terms?

That depends on the operator. You will find the exact deadlines and conditions directly with the provider.

What about safety when docking in restrictive countries?

The operators are careful about route choices. At controversial ports, shore excursions are curated thoughtfully.
