Zurich — Lake, Old Town and Queer Diversity

Gay Zurich is compact, easy to explore on foot and more relaxed than the reputation of the banking city would suggest. In Niederdorf, the old town centre, which many call Dörfli, lies the historic heart of the scene. For decades, most of the city's gay bars have been spread out through the narrow cobblestone streets on the right bank of the Limmat, and the distances between the bars are short. Those who like it a little rougher and more alternative can move on to the Langstrasse district around Langstrasse, the most mixed district in Zurich with clubs, bars and community spaces. Both areas are good as a base if you want to live close to the action, because from here it is not far to the lake and the old town.

One of the highlights is Zurich Pride, whose big demonstration in 2026 will take place on June 20 and will parade through Bellevue, Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse with tens of thousands of participants. If you arrive during these days, you should book the accommodation early. Apart from that, the city can be easily combined with classic sightseeing all year round, from a walk along Lake Zurich to the old town with Grossmünster and Fraumünster. The best time to visit is later spring and summer, when the weather is mild, you can sit by the lake and there is the busiest around Pride anyway. In winter, Zurich is quieter, but the Alps are practically on the doorstep for a detour.
