As the capital of a country that is considered a pioneer for LGBT rights in Europe, Valletta combines golden baroque with harbour panoramas and a small but warm scene. St John's Co-Cathedral is home to Baroque splendour, including a Caravaggio masterpiece, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens offer views across the Grand Harbour.

In the evening, almost everyone is drawn to the revitalized Strait Street, where queer karaoke, drag shows and cocktail terraces with sunset views of the water are lined up - this is where the majority of the country's gay-friendly bars and clubs are concentrated. It's sunny and warm between April and October, and Malta is one of the few destinations where couples feel comfortable with public caresses almost everywhere. Malta Pride traditionally starts in late summer at the Triton Fountain in the middle of Valletta.

Day 1

Fortified City & Grand Harbour

15:00 Arrive and stroll through the baroque fortified city, whose streets stretch across the peninsula in a checkerboard pattern — Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
17:00 To the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the best unobstructed views over the Grand Harbour; at 4 p.m., the Saluting Battery fires its cannons.
20:30 First evening in Strait Street, the revitalized bar district with wine and cocktail bars — meeting place for Valletta's queer scene.

Day 2

St John's Co-Cathedral & City Centre

10:00 Visit St John's Co-Cathedral on Republic Street — a Baroque jewel box with tombs of the Knights of Malta and Caravaggio's 'Beheading of John the Baptist'.
14:00 Stroll through the center along Republic Street, take a coffee break at one of the waterfront terraces, and a queer atmosphere where everyone knows everyone.
22:30 Maltese night: from queer karaoke to drag shows to laid-back cocktails, the scene is small, but there's something for every mood.

Day 3

Harbour Promenade & Three Cities

10:30 Take the traditional ferry boat across the Grand Harbour to the 'Three Cities' — historic harbour towns with less hustle and bustle and a lot of charm.
13:00 Last Mediterranean lunch by the water before heading back — sun, harbor panorama and Maltese serenity as a farewell.

Gay Valletta

Gay Valletta is less of a scene in its own right and more a laid-back gateway to one of Europe's most queer-friendly countries. Malta has been at the top of the ILGA Europe ranking for years, marriage for all has been in force since 2017, and hardly anyone notices this in everyday life in the baroque capital. You move through narrow alleys of honey-colored limestone, past cafes and small galleries, without having to think about hidden glances. However, the old town itself does not have a pronounced bar and club density for queer audiences.

The real nightlife takes place about twenty minutes away in St. Julian's and in neighboring Paceville. This is where most of the establishments that explicitly appeal to a gay or mixed crowd are located, as well as bars and clubs that are open anyway. If you want to live close to the hustle and bustle, this is the place for you; if you are looking for peace, architecture and good food, it is better to stay in Valletta and accept the short way to party. As a compromise on the water, Sliema works in between. Highlights include the UNESCO fortified city with its viewing terraces over the Grand Harbour, the Co-Cathedral of St. John, and day trips to Mdina or the Blue Grotto. As for the travel season: May to October is warm and stable, the highlight for queer guests is Malta Pride, which runs through Valletta's streets every September.
