Queer spots in the center

The scene is manageable, but lively: small bars in and around the old town as well as in the hip district of Kalamaja form the core. Estonia's oldest gay bar and theatre bars with drag and show programmes provide variety. You feel safe and welcome in the center from the old town to the Rotermann district.
Best time to visit

From June to August, Tallinn is at its best: long, bright evenings, mild temperatures and open-air life in the cafés. In midsummer, many cruise guests come, so it's best to explore the old town early in the morning or late afternoon.

The creative district of Telliskivi in a former factory with galleries, design shops, cafés and the Fotomuseum Fotografiska. There is a flea market here on Saturdays from May to October. The colourful wooden house district of Kalamaja next door invites you to stroll.

Although Tallinn's queer scene is small, it's warm and easy to explore on foot. Its core is in and around the medieval old town as well as in hip Kalamaja, where Estonia's oldest gay bar meets theatre bars with drag and show programmes. If you stroll through the cobblestone streets of the old town, you should not miss the ascent to the Toompea viewpoint - the view over the red roofs is one of the most beautiful in the city.

Just a few minutes' walk away is the creative district of Telliskivi, a former factory complex with galleries, design shops and the Fotomuseum Fotografiska, right next to the colourful wooden house district of Kalamaja. In the evenings, life shifts to the small bars of the scene, often with karaoke or drag programs and an audience of locals and travelers who quickly get into conversation. Because Estonia is one of the most progressive countries in the Baltic States in terms of equality, this is also reflected in the relaxed interaction in the centre.

Day 1

Old Town

15:00 Check in and immerse yourself in the medieval old town: cobblestone alleys, the town hall square and a climb to the Toompea viewpoint with a view over the red roofs.
19:00 Dinner in one of the cozy restaurants in the winding streets of the old town, followed by a walk along the old city wall.
22:00 First evening in the queer scene: Drinks in one of the small bars in the center, where the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting.

Day 2

Kalamaja & Telliskivi

11:00 Brunch in the creative district of Telliskivi, followed by a stroll through design shops, street art and galleries in the converted factory halls.
15:00 Walk through Kalamaja with its colorful wooden houses, past the harbor and the former industrial backdrop of Noblessner.
23:00 Nightlife evening with drag show or dancing in one of the trendy bars — compact, but with heart and a mixed audience of locals and travelers.

Gay Tallinn

Gay Tallinn is a laid-back destination for gay travelers who want to combine medieval old town scenery with a small but visible scene. Estonia's capital passes as the most liberal place in the Baltic States, and since January 1, 2024, marriage for same-sex couples has been the first post-Soviet country to be allowed here. There is no clearly demarcated gay district. Instead, the few bars and meeting places are spread across the centre, many of them in or near the UNESCO-protected old town with its towers, alleys and town hall square.

Those who stay longer combine the scene well with the rest of the cityscape. Between the old town and the harbour, the Rotermann Quarter stands for converted industrial architecture, cafés and modern gastronomy. North of the centre, the Kalamaja wooden house district attracts a young, creative environment with quiet streets, colourful facades and a student crowd and is suitable for a relaxing day away from the tourist crowds. Queer guests usually feel safe in the center, but clear tenderness in public is less common outside the pubs than in Western Europe. Tallinn Pride was revived in 2017 and is the most visible queer date of the year; together with the Baltic Pride, which travels in turn through the three Baltic capitals. It is best to travel during the long, bright summer months from June to August, while the winter months are cold and dark.
