Stockholm — Island city with an open scene

Gay Stockholm is a laid-back destination for gay travelers that doesn't require much fanfare. Since 2009, Sweden has opened marriage to all, and in everyday life in the city you hardly notice that openness was once an issue here. There is no demarcated gay mile. Because the queer bars, clubs and cafés are spread over several districts, Södermalm, the hilly island south of the old town, is particularly striking. "Söder", as the Stockholmers say, has been considered the alternative and queer heart of the city for years. Around the Götgatan shopping street and the smaller alleys, you will find a mixed, young crowd that is out and about all year round. There are also some addresses in the old town of Gamla Stan.

Besides the nightlife, Stockholm has enough for several days. The city is spread over fourteen islands, with plenty of water in between, plus the well-preserved Gamla Stan, museums such as the Vasa Museum and the archipelago islands off the coast. In the queer calendar, Stockholm Pride is the highlight in the height of summer, with a festival week and the big parade that falls on Saturday, August 1 in 2026. If you like it quieter, travel in late spring or early autumn, when the days are long and bright and the city is less crowded. Södermalm is a good base from where you can easily reach the scene and sights on foot or by subway.
