Sitges — Beach, sun and queer tradition

Gay Sitges is one of the oldest and best-known gay destinations in Europe and is located only about 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona directly on the Mediterranean Sea. In a very small area, the small coastal town combines beach, old town and a very visible queer scene. The centre of the action is the old town around Plaça de la Indústria and the bar alleys Carrer de Sant Bonaventura and Carrer del Pecat, where bars, cafés and small hotels are close together. You can reach a lot on foot in a few minutes, from the bed to the bar to the beach.

Gay beach culture dates back to the 1930s, when Platja de l'Home Mort was one of the first gay beaches on the continent. Today, travelers meet mainly at La Bassa Rodona and the natural beach of Balmins. Catalonia is one of the most open regions in Europe, which makes the stay relaxed for gay couples. The highlights of the year are spread throughout the season: the colourful Carnaval in February, Sitges Pride in June, 2026 from 10 to 14 June, and Bears Week in September. If you like it quieter, travel in spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and the city is less crowded. The old town is suitable as a base, from which you can combine the scene, beach and sights well.
