Rome — Antiquity, Dolce Vita and Balmy Evenings

Gay Rome combines the ancient heritage of the Eternal City with a scene that is compact but easy to grasp. Unlike Barcelona or Berlin, Rome does not have a single large gay district, but several meeting places. The most important is Gay Street on Via San Giovanni in Laterano, which is located east of the Colosseum in the Celio district and has served as a meeting place since the 1960s. There, bars, cafés and pubs are lined up like Coming Out. In bohemian Trastevere, across the Tiber, you'll find a second bundle of queer bars.

The area around the Colosseum is a good base because you can combine the scene and sights well from there. The big destinations such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon and the Vatican are on the list anyway, plus the small alleys, piazzas and fountains of the city center. For the late club nights, you sometimes have to go further out to Ostiense, which is part of the Roman nightlife. The queer highlight of the year is Roma Pride, which in 2026 will lead from the center to Piazza Venezia on June 20 with a huge parade. If you like it quieter and cooler, travel in spring or early autumn, when the city is less crowded and the weather is pleasant. Midsummer is hot and crowded, but then with a Pride atmosphere.
