Iceland is one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, and the small capital can be easily explored on foot in a weekend. Scene around the Laugavegur

The queer nightlife is concentrated in the shopping and nightlife mile Laugavegur in the center. A permanently rainbow-colored section of street shows how natural queer life is here. The scene is small, but warm and uncomplicated — you quickly get into conversation.

Best time to visit

June to August is the most pleasant: long days, mild temperatures around 12 to 14 degrees and the famous midnight sun, where it hardly gets really dark in June. August also sees Reykjavík Pride, one of the biggest events of the year.

A dip in one of the geothermal pools or lagoons is part of Iceland — relaxing in the warm water while the cool air blows outside. If you have time, combine the weekend with a day trip into the surrounding nature with geysers, waterfalls and volcanic landscapes.

Day 1

Centre & Laugavegur

15:00 Arrive, check in at the center and stroll along Laugavegur in a relaxed manner. Past the rainbow-colored street section, take a look at small design shops and cafés.

18:00 Early evening with a view of the Harpa concert hall at the harbour and a walk to the striking Hallgrímskirkja, from whose tower you can overlook the whole colourful city.

22:00 Into the queer nightlife: Drinks and drag, karaoke or simply dancing in the lively bar scene around Laugavegur, which never feels completely dark thanks to the midnight sun.

Day 2

Wellness & Nature

10:00 Sleep in comfortably and start with brunch in one of the cafés in the centre. Then stroll through the old town to the small lake Tjörnin.

14:00 Relaxing in a geothermal pool or lagoon — warm, mineral-rich water in the open air is the perfect weekend ritual.

21:00 Relaxed evening with dinner in the center and nightcap in the scene. If you like, you can end the long, bright evening with a walk along the harbour.

Day 3

Surroundings & Nature

09:00 Day trip to the surrounding area: Geysers, waterfalls and vast volcanic landscapes are only a few hours' drive away and can be easily experienced in one day.

16:00 Back in Reykjavík, get some last souvenirs on the Laugavegur and end the weekend with coffee and a snail.

Gay Reykjavik

Gay Reykjavik surprises many travelers. The Icelandic capital gets by almost without classic scene boundaries, which is why there is no gay area of its own. On the other hand, the city is considered to be extremely open, and queer guests are of course welcome in most restaurants. If you still search specifically, you will end up around Laugavegur, the central shopping and nightlife street. There is the Kiki Queer Bar, the city's best-known LGBTQ address, known for drag nights, karaoke and dance nights on weekends. Because many things take place compactly in the centre, you can quickly get from one bar to the next on foot.

The best place to travel is the old city center 101 Reykjavik. From there, the harbour, Hallgrímskirkja and the bars can be reached in a few minutes. The biggest queer event is Reykjavik Pride in August, which is one of the most visited events in the country with its parade. In 2026, Pride Week will run from August 4 to 9. If you value mild temperatures, long days and open excursion destinations, travel in summer. For the Northern Lights and snow-covered landscapes, on the other hand, winter is worthwhile, but then with much shorter days and cooler weather.
