Scene around Rua do Almada

Porto's queer life is not a compact neighborhood, but a relaxed constellation that is easily accessible on foot. Rua do Almada is the central artery of queer nightlife and extends over to Cedofeita and Bonfim. The scene is smaller than in Lisbon, but super friendly and really comes alive on weekends.
Best time to visit

May to September brings mild to warm weather, ideal for days on the riverfront and balmy evenings. The Marcha do Orgulho, Porto's Pride, typically takes place at the end of June and is a real street festival that takes over the city centre.

Porto thrives on the contrast between the pastel-coloured Ribeira on the Douro and the port wine cellars over in Vila Nova de Gaia, which can be reached in a few minutes via the Ponte Dom Luís I. If you want to see the city from above, climb the Torre dos Clérigos and look over the rooftops to the river. In between, the narrow streets of the old town and the Livraria Lello bookstore invite you to stroll.

The queer scene is not concentrated in a single district, but stretches as a loose chain of bars along Rua do Almada to Cedofeita and Bonfim - smaller than in Lisbon, but extremely warm and full of life on weekends. The most pleasant time to travel is in late spring and summer, when balmy evenings are possible on the river promenade and the Marcha do Orgulho transforms the city centre into a street festival.

Baixa & Clérigos

Gay Porto

Gay Porto is manageable, but charming. Instead of being spread out over a clearly demarcated district, the scene of the northern Portuguese city mixes with the generally very open nightlife culture of the old town. Those looking for queer nightlife usually end up in the center around the Baixa, where in the evening the alleys around Rua Cândido dos Reis and the Galerias de Paris fill with bars, small clubs and open-air drinkers. These streets are also home to most of the establishments that are explicitly aimed at a gay and lesbian audience. Because the mass tourism of some metropolises is missing, the atmosphere remains relaxed and personal.

The city centre between Avenida dos Aliados, Bolhão and Clérigos is ideal as an accommodation area, because almost everything is within walking distance from there. If you want to fill the day, you will find it at the Livraria Lello bookstore, the Ribeira waterfront promenade and a detour across the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia to the port wine cellars. Porto is considered liberal and safe, because open hostility is rare; in more rural corners, however, discreet restraint does not hurt. May to September is the best time to visit, when the weather remains mild and the city is at its liveliest. In summer, Porto Pride is added. For a few days, he visibly brings queer life to the streets.
