Marseille is not a city for glossy postcards. At the Vieux-Port, it smells of salt water and grilled fish, seagulls screech above the fish stalls, and queer life blends naturally with everyday life here. If you wander through the narrow streets of Le Panier, you will find street art on almost every house wall and small cafés, hardly larger than a living room.

In the evening, the scene moves to the Opéra district: narrow terraces, loyal regulars, music between house and techno. During the day, it is worth climbing to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, the "Bonne Mère" – from there the whole city is at your feet, including the harbour and the Mediterranean Sea. Art and history can be found at Cours Julien, the creative heart with vintage shops and alternative flair.

Finally, a visit to the MuCEM directly on the water is worthwhile, before a last Mediterranean meal awaits you at the harbor. Marseille remains raw and unpolished. That's exactly what makes the city likeable.

Vieux-Port & Le Panier

15:00 Arrive at the Vieux-Port and soak up the hustle and bustle: boats, seagulls and market atmosphere — from here you immediately understand Marseille.
17:30 Roam through Le Panier, the oldest district of the city: narrow streets, street art, small boutiques and cozy cafes just a few steps from the harbor.
21:00 First evening in the scene around the Opéra district — small terraces, loyal regulars and music that leans in the direction of house and techno.

Day 2

Notre-Dame de la Garde & Cours Julien

10:00 Ascent to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the 'Bonne Mère' high above the city — from here you can see Marseille, the port and the Mediterranean Sea at a glance.
14:00 Afternoon at the creative Cours Julien: street art, trendy cafés, vintage shops and the alternative, queer lifestyle of the district.

MuCEM & Harbour Promenade

10:30 Visit to MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean — the striking museum of Mediterranean civilizations from Marseille's time as European Capital of Culture, with jetties over the water.
13:00 Last Mediterranean lunch at the harbour or in La Major before heading back — sun, sea air and Marseille nonchalance as a farewell.

Gay Marseille

Gay Marseille is a bit out of the ordinary suspects on the Mediterranean, as the city does not have a clearly defined gay district in the style of Paris or Barcelona. Spread over several corners lies queer life, with a clear focus around the Cours Julien in the 6th arrondissement. The quarter is considered an alternative, creative part of the city, full of street art and small bars with terraces. You won't find any pure trendy clubs here: The shops are mostly neighborhood addresses where a mixed audience of gay men, queer women and locals meet. Other bars are closer to the Old Port, the Vieux-Port, which is the natural centre for a visit to the city anyway.

The tone is Mediterranean and unpretentious: small terraces, regulars and music that goes more in the direction of house and techno than chart pop. In terms of prices, Marseille is noticeably below the Parisian level, with a drink costing around four to seven euros in most bars. In addition to the nightlife, the city is worth a whole day, from the Vieux-Port to the artists' quarter Le Panier to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, high above the rooftops and, in summer, the beaches along the Corniche. If you want to experience the weather warm and life outside, it is best to travel between late spring and early autumn. The area between Vieux-Port and Cours Julien is a good starting point, from which you can quickly connect the scene and sights on foot.
