Málaga's queer life is spread over the creative Soho district near the harbour and promenade as well as the bar mile around the Plaza de la Merced and Calle Cervantes in the centre. Here you will find a small but visible scene with a mixed, relaxed audience.
Best time to visit

Thanks to the mild climate on the Costa del Sol, Málaga is beautiful almost all year round; April to October is most pleasant for beach and terraces. If you want to celebrate, plan the Málaga Pride in early summer – in nearby Torremolinos there is also a beach club and circuit atmosphere.

The Picasso Museum pays tribute to the city's most famous son with over two hundred works, while the Moorish fortress Alcazaba with Gibralfaro Castle towers high above the rooftops. Down by the harbour, in Muelle Uno, a branch of the Centre Pompidou provides an unexpected artistic accent on the Costa del Sol.

The queer scene is small but visible and is spread over two corners of the city: the Soho district near the harbour and promenade, which is characterised by graffiti and murals, and the bar mile around the Plaza de la Merced and Calle Cervantes in the centre, where a mixed, relaxed crowd comes together. Thanks to the mild coastal climate, Málaga can be visited almost all year round, and the most pleasant time for beaches and terraces is between April and October.

Day 1

Center & Soho

15:00 Arrive and stroll through the historic center to the Plaza de la Merced and the Picasso Birthplace.

Day 2

Alcazaba & Port

10:00 Ascent to the Moorish Alcazaba and further up to Gibralfaro Castle with 360-degree views over the city and sea.

Museums & Promenade

Gay Malaga

Gay Malaga differs from the well-known party places on the Costa del Sol because the gay life here is spread out in the middle of a lively Andalusian city instead of on a single bar alley. The queer scene is concentrated especially in the historic center around the Plaza de la Merced and the streets around the Teatro Cervantes, plus the neighboring Soho district near the harbor and promenade. In this network of old town alleys, gay and mixed bars, cafés and smaller clubs are close together, so that an evening can be easily spent on foot. A concentrated club mile is more likely to be found in nearby Torremolinos. You can get there by bus or Cercanías train in about half an hour.

Malaga also scores with everything that makes a city trip. Because the city beach La Malagueta is right on the doorstep, the compact old town with its cathedral, the Moorish Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum can be easily combined with beach days. In the center, in the Soho and on the beach, queer couples move uninhibitedly, the atmosphere is relaxed and cosmopolitan. The most important date in the queer calendar is Malaga Pride in June, which fills the center for a few days. Spring and autumn are particularly suitable as a travel time because the weather remains mild and the city is less crowded. In midsummer it gets hot and crowded, but the beach and nightlife season is at its peak.
