Lyon is considered France's secret capital of pleasure and is the second stronghold of the country's queer scene after Paris. On a long weekend, you'll combine UNESCO renaissance, hills with views, and a laid-back nightlife scene around the Presqu'île. Everything here is just a rough suggestion that you can convert as you please.

What to expect

1
Trendy district
The queer scene is concentrated in the Presqu'île and the La Guillotière district in the 1st and 2nd arrondissements — a compact, easily explorable zone between the Rhône and Saône rivers with bars, some of which have been running continuously for decades.
2
Best time to visit
May to September is mild and lively. In mid-June, the Fierté Lesbian and Gay Pride takes place with a parade through Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île — if you like hustle and bustle, plan the weekend around this date.
3
Don't Miss
The Renaissance old town district of Vieux Lyon with its winding traboules passages, the climb to the Fourvière Basilica with a view over the city and an evening in a traditional bouchon — the typical Lyonnais cuisine.

Your programme — day by day

Day 1

Vieux Lyon & Fourvière

15:00 Arrive and stroll through Vieux Lyon: the UNESCO Renaissance district on the Saône with cobblestones and hidden traboules passageways once used by silk merchants.
17:30 Take the funicular up the Fourvière hill to the basilica — from here you have a wide view over Lyon, the rivers and the rooftops.
20:00 Dinner in a bouchon and then a first drink in one of the trendy bars around the Presqu'île to immerse yourself in the Lyon evening.
Day 2

Presqu'île & La Croix-Rousse

10:00 Breakfast and stroll along the Presqu'île between Place Bellecour and the shops — the elegant peninsula in the heart of the city.
14:00 Up to La Croix-Rousse, the bohemian 'working hills' with silk weaving history, murals, markets and laid-back village feel.
23:00 Nightlife in the scene: from the cozy bar to the club with drag and DJ sets — the Lyon night is manageable, but warm and gets going late.
Day 3

Confluence & banks of the Rhône

10:30 A leisurely morning on the banks of the Rhône, which Lyon residents love as a promenade — ideal for coffee, sun and people-watching.
13:00 Last round of indulgence: a Lyonnais lunch or a detour to the modern Confluence district at the confluence of the two rivers before heading back.

Gay Lyon

Gay Lyon takes place mainly on the Presqu'île, the headland between the Rhône and Saône in the center of the city. In the northern part, roughly between the Place des Terreaux and the Cordeliers district, most of the gay bars are close together, plus individual addresses on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse. The distances are short. A lot can be explored on foot, and from here you can quickly reach the great sights of the old town, the Vieux Lyon and the traboules during the day. After Paris and Marseille, Lyon is the third largest city in France and is considered one of the most queer-friendly in the country.

The nightlife is more manageable than in Paris, but many people know each other in the bars, and the tone is relaxed. In summer, people sit on the terraces and in front of the restaurants, in winter everything moves indoors. The highlight of the year is the Marche des Fiertés, which takes place in Lyon in summer; In 2026, two dates in June and July have even been announced because different organizers have joined forces or split up. Spring to early autumn is best for a trip, when temperatures are mild and life takes place outside. If you like to eat well, Lyon is the right place for you anyway: The city is considered the capital of French cuisine. This page gives you an overview of the scene, location and highlights for your stay.
