London is virtually limitless for queer travellers – the scene stretches from the narrow streets around Old Compton Street in Soho to the rougher nightlife districts of Vauxhall and Dalston. If you're there for the first time, it's a good idea not to take on everything, but to really experience one or two quarters.

Soho remains the historic heart: bars and cafés are close together, and on warm evenings half of Soho sits outside on the street. If you like it less touristy, head out to Vauxhall or Dalston, where the alternative scene is at home.

In between, the city itself fits perfectly: Tate Modern, British Museum and National Gallery are free of charge and can easily be combined with an evening in Soho. A walk through Shoreditch and Spitalfields Market rounds off the trip before heading back to the bars of Soho for the last evening.

Gay London

Gay London is one of the oldest and most diverse queer scenes in Europe, but is spread over several neighborhoods instead of a single neighborhood. The historic center in Soho is centered around Old Compton Street, which has been considered the visible heart of gay life in the city since the 1970s. During the day you sit here in the café, in the evening you move from bar to bar, all within walking distance and in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the West End. If you want to party, drive across the Thames to Vauxhall, where the big clubs and circuit parties are located. Clapham and the east of the city also have their own queer addresses.

Which area is best suited for living depends on what you have in mind. Soho and the West End are ideal for nightlife and short distances, while for cheaper hotels it is worth taking a look at the well-connected outskirts. A clear highlight is Pride in London: in 2026, the parade will move from Hyde Park Corner via Piccadilly, Regent Street and Oxford Street to Whitehall on Saturday, July 4. Book early if you come in this time. Otherwise, London can be traveled all year round, most pleasantly between May and September, when the days are long and the pubs are full.
