Ljubljana is one of Europe's greenest and most relaxed capitals — compact, mostly car-free, and ideal for a weekend on foot. The queer scene is small and alternative, and the autonomous cultural centre Metelkova is its centrepiece. In the center along the Ljubljanica you feel welcome. Everything here is just a rough suggestion that you can change freely.

What to expect

1
Metelkova & Old Town
The former army compound Metelkova is now an anarchic, colorful cultural center with graffiti, concerts and the queer club Tiffany, which has existed since the 1990s. In the centre, the Café-Cultural Centre Pritličje at the Town Hall invites you to relax and pre-heat. Both are close to each other and can be easily reached on foot.

Best time to visit
From May to September, Ljubljana is at its most beautiful: warm weather, riverside life, and crowded terraces. In June, the Parada ponosa, the city's pride parade, takes place — with parades, talks, films and club nights. The city has been awarded the title of European Green Capital 2016.

Don't Miss
The largest car-free zone in the EU makes the old town wonderfully relaxed. The funicular takes you up to Ljubljana Castle with a view over the red roofs to the Julian Alps. The sprawling Tivoli Park right in the centre is the city's green lung.

Your programme — day by day

Day 1

Old Town & Riverside

15:00 Check in and stroll through the car-free old town: over the Three Bridges, past the Central Market and the cafés along the Ljubljanica.
18:00 Take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for the sunset and views over the city to the mountains.
21:00 Relaxed evening: Drinks and people-watching on the terrace of Pritličje at the town hall, the queer-friendly café and cultural meeting place in the centre.
Day 2

Tivoli Park & Metelkova

10:00 Morning walk through Tivoli Park, the green lung right at the center, with tree-lined paths and meadows.
15:00 Afternoon at the Metelkova Autonomous Cultural Centre: graffiti art, alternative galleries and the very special atmosphere of the former army site.
23:00 Queer club night at Club Tiffany in Metelkova — alternative, warm and affordable, with a changing program from concerts to parties.

Gay Ljubljana

Gay Ljubljana is a laid-back destination for gay travelers looking for a manageable, green capital city with a short distance and no metropolitan pace. There is no separate gay area with a dense bar mile. Instead, queer life takes place mainly in the center, around the old town on the Ljubljanica River and in the alternative cultural center Metelkova, a former barracks site that now houses clubs, studios and event venues. Within the region, Slovenia is one of the more liberal countries. Since 2022, same-sex marriage has been legally possible, and in everyday life, the city usually remains unagitated for queer guests.

You can reach most of the sights on foot. The castle towers above the city, from which you have a wide view of the Julian Alps, accessible on foot or by funicular. Below, the bridges by architect Jože Plečnik dominate the picture, especially the Three Bridges and the Dragon Bridge with their green dragon figures. The car-free centre, the many cafés on the water and the nearby Tivoli Park make your stay pleasant. Ljubljana Pride usually takes place in June. The best time to visit is in late spring and early autumn, when it's mild and the terraces are open, while midsummer is warm and a bit fuller.
