Istanbul — Two continents on the Bosporus

Gay Istanbul is a destination with two faces, and you should know that before booking. For years, gay life has been taking place in the Beyoğlu district, especially in the side streets around Taksim Square and İstiklal Street. Bars, cafés and clubs are hidden here on the upper floors and alleys, often without much signage. With queer-friendly cafés and lounges, neighboring neighborhoods such as hip Cihangir and creative Karaköy complement the scene. The nightlife is lively if you know where to look, mixing locals with travelers.

At the same time, the political situation is tense. Istanbul Pride has been banned by the authorities since 2015, and in 2025 the police broke up the march and arrested participants. Homosexuality itself is not punishable in Turkey, but public tenderness between men is conspicuous and is not welcome in conservative areas. While you can move more relaxed in the touristy and more liberal districts, a little restraint outside the scene is still advisable. In addition to the nightlife, Istanbul is worthwhile for Hagia Sophia, bazaar, Bosphorus and its location between Europe and Asia. Spring and autumn are ideal travel times, when the weather is mild and the big heat and tourist waves are absent.
