Trendy district Oltrarno

Beyond the Arno, Florence becomes quieter and more personal. In the Oltrarno and around the Piazza Santo Spirito, young, creative people meet, here you can relax and hold hands and show affection freely. Also in San Niccolò you will find cozy bars for a glass of wine and good conversation.
Best time to visit

April to June and September to October offer the best mix of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, often over 35 degrees, and very crowded, which is why the shoulder season is particularly worthwhile for the weekend.

Florence doesn't need a big scene to make queer life visible - it's just part of it here, especially in laid-back Oltrarno on the other side of the Arno. The city itself is one big open-air museum: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its famous dome, the Ponte Vecchio with its old goldsmith's shops, all around narrow streets that look different at any time of the day.

The Uffizi Gallery is a must, preferably with a pre-booked ticket, because the queues are long and the collection is one of the most important of the Renaissance. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, cross the river into the Oltrarno: narrower alleys, Piazza Santo Spirito as a resting place, and in the evening a scene that mixes calmly with the rest of the nightlife.

A detour to the Boboli Gardens behind Palazzo Pitti or to the quiet San Niccolò rounds off the weekend, with a view of the city and a glass of wine.

Day 1

Centro Storico

15:00 Arrive and go to the Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore, marvel at the dome from the outside and stroll through Piazza della Repubblica.
18:00 Walk across the Ponte Vecchio, the famous old bridge market, and catch the sunset over the Arno.
20:30 Dinner and drinks at the Centro Storico, where the queer bars around Piazza della Repubblica are located.

Day 2

Uffizi Gallery & Oltrarno

10:00 Pre-booked visit to the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings.
15:00 Cross the Arno into the Oltrarno, wander through the narrower streets and take a break in Piazza Santo Spirito.
21:00 End the evening at Oltrarno, where the queer scene mixes in a relaxed manner and without much excitement.

Day 3

Boboli & San Niccolò

10:00 Explore the Boboli Gardens behind Palazzo Pitti and stroll through the sculptures of the 16th century.
14:00 Cozy finish in the quiet neighborhood of San Niccolò with a glass of wine before heading back.

Gay Florenz

Gay Florence is not a destination for the big club night, but for all those who want to combine gay travel with Renaissance art, good food and short distances. With around 350,000 inhabitants, the queer scene is correspondingly manageable. But it is present, and it has been rooted for decades: The Tabasco on Piazza Santa Cecilia, just a few steps from Piazza della Signoria, is considered the oldest gay club in Italy and has been in operation since 1976. Since 1994, the Piccolo Café near the Basilica Santa Croce has held the fort and is a good starting point for a quieter evening. For events and connections on site, it is worth taking a look at the program of Arcigay Firenze.

There is no clearly demarcated gay mile. The relevant addresses are mainly spread over the Oltrarno district on the other side of the Arno and in the alleys around Piazza della Repubblica. During the day, Florence is all about the old town anyway: the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo with Brunelleschi's dome, the Ponte Vecchio and the view from Piazzale Michelangelo. Because the historic centre is compact, almost everything can be done on foot. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant places to travel, when the midsummer heat and the largest crowds of visitors are absent. If you want to join the scene in the evening, it's best to plan a weekend and see in advance which parties are currently on.
