Gay Dublin
Gay Dublin is more compact and unpretentious than many European capitals, and that's what makes the Irish capital so appealing. There is no clearly demarcated gay area here like in Berlin or Madrid. Instead, the scene is spread across the city centre, with two clear focal points on both sides of the River Liffey. To the south, South Great George's Street forms the historic centrepiece, often called "the Gaybourhood" by locals. The George is the oldest and largest gay bar in the city, which has been part of the community since 1985 and still organizes drag shows and club nights today. North of the Liffey is the second hub around Capel Street, where the well-known drag performer Panti Bliss runs the PantiBar.
The city centre is well suited as a base, such as the area around Temple Bar and Grafton Street, from which most restaurants are within walking distance. If you like it quieter and more homely, look around in neighborhoods like Stoneybatter or Portobello, which are considered relaxed and queer-friendly. As early as 2015, Ireland was the first country to introduce same-sex marriage by referendum, and this open climate can be felt in everyday life. Between May and September is the best time to visit, when the days are long and mild. The highlight of the scene calendar is Dublin Pride at the end of June with a parade and festival programme.
