Cologne — Rhine metropolis with heart

Gay Cologne is one of the first destinations in Germany for many queer travelers, and there are good reasons for that. The scene is compact and lies almost entirely around Rudolfplatz: Schaafenstraße, Mathiasstraße and Moltkestraße form the Bermuda Triangle, where bars, cafés and clubs are crowded within a few hundred metres. The heart of the city is Schaafenstraße, which has one of the highest bar densities in the entire city. Short distances are the rule here. You walk from one location to the next without having to call a taxi.

The city centre around Rudolfplatz is best suited as a base, because the bars as well as the cathedral and the banks of the Rhine can be reached quickly from there. Cologne is an open, sociable city, characterized by carnival and uncomplicated interaction with each other, and you notice that in the scene all year round. You can travel at any time, but it is most lively in summer. The highlight is ColognePride, which runs from June 19 to July 5 in 2026, with the street festival from July 3 to 5 and the big parade on Sunday, July 5. If you come at this time, you should book your accommodation early, because the central houses are then quickly booked up. Cologne is one of the most queer-friendly cities in Germany, and you feel it immediately in everyday life.
