Budapest combines two things that at first glance have little to do with each other: hot thermal springs and wild ruin bars. In the Jewish quarter, around the VII district of Erzsébetváros, the two are only a few steps apart. During the day, it's worth strolling through the alleys with their weathered facades and the lively Gozsdu courtyard, in the evening bars like the legendary Szimpla Kert, which is located in a former factory hall, take over.

Relax at the Széchenyi Baths in the City Park or the historic Rudas Baths - both are popular with queer travelers and invite you to spend hours in the warm water. A walk along the Danube, past the imposing Parliament and over the Chain Bridge, shows the city from its most beautiful side.

The funicular takes you up to the Castle District, where the Fisherman's Bastion offers one of the best views over the Danube and the city - a quiet contrast to the nocturnal hustle and bustle of the Jewish Quarter.

Gay Budapest

Gay Budapest is a good destination for gay travelers looking for thermal baths, coffeehouse culture, and an affordable city break experience. However, there is no clearly defined gay area here like in Berlin or Barcelona. Most of the bars, clubs and queer-friendly cafes are located in the center of Pest, especially in District VI and VII around Andrássy út and in the Jewish Quarter with its Ruin bars. Much of it can be reached on foot. You can also get everywhere with the metro, which is itself a small sight as the second oldest subway in Europe.

In addition to the nightlife, a city trip fills up quickly: the castle district on the Ofen side, the parliament on the Danube, the Chain Bridge and the historic thermal baths such as the Széchenyi or the Gellért. Hungary's politics are considered conservative, and same-sex marriages are not possible. In the daily cityscape, Budapest remains relaxed for travelers, especially in the center. Discretion in public is more widespread here than elsewhere. Budapest Pride usually takes place in the middle of summer and is the most visible queer date of the year. The best time to visit is in early summer and early autumn, when the weather is mild and the intense heat of July and August is absent.
