Budapest — Thermal Baths & Ruin Bars

Gay Budapest is a good destination for gay travelers looking for thermal baths, coffeehouse culture, and an affordable city break experience. However, there is no clearly defined gay area here like in Berlin or Barcelona. Most of the bars, clubs and queer-friendly cafes are located in the center of Pest, especially in District VI and VII around Andrássy út and in the Jewish Quarter with its Ruin bars. Much of it can be reached on foot. You can also get everywhere with the metro, which is itself a small sight as the second oldest subway in Europe.

In addition to the nightlife, a city trip fills up quickly: the castle district on the Ofen side, the parliament on the Danube, the Chain Bridge and the historic thermal baths such as the Széchenyi or the Gellért. Hungary's politics are considered conservative, and same-sex marriages are not possible. In the daily cityscape, Budapest remains relaxed for travelers, especially in the center. Discretion in public is more widespread here than elsewhere. Budapest Pride usually takes place in the middle of summer and is the most visible queer date of the year. The best time to visit is in early summer and early autumn, when the weather is mild and the intense heat of July and August is absent.
