Bologna is considered the LGBTIQA+ capital of Italy. The Cassero LGBTQIA+ Center, founded in 1983, is Italy's oldest queer organization and home to one of the largest LGBTQIA+ libraries in Europe, as well as drag nights, parties and cultural events. The scene is visible and widely accepted in the historic center.
Best time to visit

April to June and September to October offer mild weather for strolling under the arcades. The long porticoes make strolling pleasant even in rain or sun, making the city easy to explore on foot all year round.

Bologna is considered the most queer-friendly city in Italy. At the heart of the scene is the Cassero LGBTQIA+ Center, founded in the 1980s as Italy's oldest queer organization – today with one of the largest LGBTQIA+ libraries in Europe as well as drag nights, parties and cultural programs. Unlike in many cities, you don't need your own trendy district: bars and meeting places are located in the middle of the historic center, under the kilometer-long porticoes, which make strolling pleasant in any weather.

Around Piazza Maggiore and Via Zamboni, the university shapes the city: young, lively, left-wing. In addition, there is the cuisine for which Bologna is known throughout Italy, with delicatessen alleys in the Quadrilatero. The mildest travel is from April to June or September to October. An evening at the Cassero, an aperitivo with locals in the center and an espresso under the arcades as a farewell are part of the fixed program of a weekend in the city.

Gay Bologna

Gay Bologna is a laid-back destination for gay travelers who want to experience Italy beyond the big tourist magnets. Located in Emilia-Romagna, the city has been considered left-wing and student for years. This rubs off on the climate: queer life here takes place less in a demarcated district than in the middle of everyday life in the old town. A central address is Cassero, the LGBTQIA+ center based in the Arcigay, which serves as a cultural venue and library during the day and becomes one of the city's best-known queer clubs in the evening. Historically, the scene was closely associated with Porta Saragozza, the old city gate in the southwest.

For going out and strolling, the Via del Pratello with its bars and restaurants as well as the university district around Piazza Verdi are particularly worthwhile. In between lies what Bologna is famous for anyway: kilometre-long arcades, which have been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2021, the leaning tower of the Due Torri and a cuisine that has earned the city the nickname La Grassa. During the day you sit in the café under the portici. As soon as it gets dark, life moves through the alleys. It is good to travel from spring to early autumn, when it is neither too humid nor too cold. If you want to experience the scene, it's best to plan a weekend with a program at the Cassero.
