Athens — Antiquity meets lively scene
Athens combines ancient landmarks with a young, energetic queer scene and good weather almost all year round. The city is cheaper than many Western European destinations. This is just a rough suggestion that you can freely adapt.
What to expect
Athens combines ancient landmarks with a young, energetic queer scene – and is cheaper than many Western European capitals. The Acropolis is worth visiting in the early morning or golden hour, when the light turns the marble columns golden. Afterwards, a stroll through the old town streets of Plaka and Monastiraki, past small taverns and antique shops.
The scene is concentrated around Gazi and Agia Irini Square; those who spend the night there have many things within walking distance. The most pleasant time to travel is in spring or early autumn – in midsummer it gets very hot, then life shifts to the cooler evening hours. Bars and clubs in Gazi open correspondingly late and do not fill until around midnight.

Gay Athen
Gay Athens is often underrated, but the Greek capital has one of the liveliest queer scenes in the Eastern Mediterranean. Unlike on the islands, gay life here is not spread over beach parties, but over a fixed nightlife district with its own bars, several saunas and a big Pride. The most important point of reference is Gazi around the old Technopolis gasworks. Since the late nineties, clubs and bars have settled there in converted industrial buildings. Queer life is also happening in neighboring Kerameikos and parts of Monastiraki, and these neighborhoods are convenient for sightseeing during the day and going out in the evening.
In 2024, Greece became the first Orthodox country to introduce same-sex marriage, which has further changed the already open mood in the city. The highlight of the queer year is Athens Pride, which will take place in 2026 on June 13 with the parade on Syntagma Square and bring tens of thousands onto the streets. Spring and autumn are best for a trip, because the summer months of July and August are very hot and many Athenians move to the islands anyway. If you want to combine culture and nightlife, you will pass the Acropolis and Antiquity during the day and almost inevitably end up in Gazi in the evening. The following pages will guide you through bars, hotels, saunas, restaurants and places worth seeing.
