What to expect
Around the Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Rembrandtplein are most of Amsterdam's queer bars, centrally located and within walking distance. The area is therefore particularly suitable as a starting point for a first queer city weekend.
A canal cruise is part of the fixed program, as is a stroll through the museum district and a walk along the canals when the evening sun is over the water. Between sights, there's plenty of time for the laid-back café culture that the city is known for.
Summer is peak season, and in early August, the city celebrates one of its biggest queer festivals right on the water with the Canal Parade. If you're looking for a compact, easy-to-plan weekend, you'll find a reliable classic in Amsterdam.

Gay Amsterdam
Gay Amsterdam has been considered one of Europe's most open travel destinations for decades, and you can feel that throughout the city. Gay life is mainly concentrated on the Reguliersdwarsstraat, a short street near the canals, where bars and clubs line up and in summer the facades open wide to the street. If you like it harder, you will find the leather and fetish scene around the Warmoesstraat in the Red Light District. The Kerkstraat has also developed into its own small nightlife mile with queer-friendly hotels.
The distances are short. Almost everything is in the center and can be reached on foot or by bike. In addition to the nightlife, the Homomonument at Westermarkt is one of the highlights, the first memorial in the world for persecuted homosexuals. 2026 is a special year: Amsterdam hosts WorldPride, which runs from July 25 to August 8, with the famous Canal Parade on the water on August 1. If you come during this period, you should book early, because the city is very crowded then. Early summer and late summer are best for a more relaxed visit anyway, when the weather is mild and life takes place outside.
