Athens combines ancient heritage with a surprisingly vibrant queer everyday life. The Acropolis towers over the city, at its feet a dense network of taverns, galleries and bars spreads. The scene is self-confident, but it cannot be reduced to a single place. She doesn't really wake up until after dark anyway.

Trendy district

The center of the gay scene is in Gazi, a former industrial district around the old gasworks. Today, the site serves as the Technopolis cultural center. Along the street Voutadon, bars and clubs are lined up in converted factory halls. During the day, the neighborhood seems quiet, in the evening the sidewalks and courtyards fill up quickly. In neighboring Metaxourgio and around Agia Irini Square, there are also restaurants with a mixed, open crowd.

Nightlife

The classic of Athenian gay clubbing is Sodade2, which fills several dance floors with different music. If you like drag, BEqueer, which is known for its sometimes radical shows, is the right place for you. The Shamone tends to attract a more mature crowd, while the S-Cape attracts younger guests with pop and Greek hits. Most shops open late. It rarely gets really crowded before midnight.

Beaches

Athens is located on the Saronic Gulf, and the so-called Athens Riviera begins just south of the center. Via the coastal tram you can reach beach sections such as Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni, which are well visited in summer. Among gay guests, the beach of Limanakia near Vouliagmeni has long been a popular meeting place, a rocky, natural bay without infrastructure. On the organized beaches with loungers and bars, those looking for comfort are better off.

Best time to visit

The summer months of July and August are hot and dry, temperatures above 35 degrees are not uncommon. It is more pleasant to travel in spring from April to June and in early autumn from September to October, when the weather remains mild and the ancient sites are less crowded. A special date is Athens Pride in mid-June. Their parade traditionally starts at Syntagma Square and then transforms the Gazi district into a large party zone.

Arrival

About 30 kilometers east of the city is Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, which can be reached directly from many German-speaking cities. From the terminal, metro line 3 runs to the centre, alternatively express buses run around the clock. Within the city you can get around cheaply by metro, bus and tram; Gazi is located directly at the stations Keramikos and Thissio. Many sights of the old town can be easily reached on foot anyway.

Safety & LGBT Rights

In recent years, Greece has significantly modernized its legislation and introduced same-sex marriage in 2024, including adoption rights. Queer guests are in good hands in Athens, especially in Gazi and in the center people are relaxed with each other. Outside the trendy districts and in more conservative areas, openly shown affection is less common, which is why it is advisable to take a look at the environment. As in any big city, increased caution applies to pickpocketing around the nightlife areas.
